The District of Columbia, which is the same as the city of Washington, is the capital of the United States. "D.C." is an abbreviation for the District of Columbia Some of the more famous sites include the White House, Capitol buildings, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian and Lincoln Memorial. Population:

    District of Columbia's history began in 1790 when Congress directed selection of a new capital site, 100 sq mi, along the Potomac River. The District of Columbia has a  typical of the mid-Atlantic weather with four distinct seasons. Summer tends to be hot and winter cold. There are many museums to visits, parks, and government buildings. In April, The Cherry Blossom festival is a must to see.
